« Assaf Matarasso est obsédé par une quête qui guide son travail de photographe : l’identité. Qui sommes-nous derrière les masques que nous portons ? Combien de couches construisons-nous ? Quelles sont ces émotions que nous souhaitons cacher ?

 

Depuis son plus jeune âge, le photographe se pose des questions sur son identité. Son enfance en Israël, marquée par la guerre du Golfe, a étouffé la créativité qu’il portait en lui et qu’il ne réussissait à libérer que par pointillés. Sa rencontre avec la photographie remonte à ses 14 ans, lorsqu’il s’est acheté un Canon 1000D. Il se promenait toujours avec son appareil sur lui, à l’affût de scènes cachées ou de lieux abîmés. Comme s’il regardait à travers le trou d’une serrure, fasciné par la noirceur du monde qui l’entourait. Après son service militaire, il est parti 6 mois en Afrique où il a découvert une misère émouvante, puis un an en Asie. Il y a capturé des scènes de la vie quotidienne, des gens et des paysages.

 

Après un bref passage en Israël, il est parti vivre à Paris pour trouver la place qu’il n’a jamais réussi à trouver dans son pays natal. Un ami l’a encouragé à exposer ses photos de voyage. Pendant les deux ans qui ont suivi, il a continué à shooter, le plus souvent en noir et blanc. Ses clichés lui ont valu d’être à nouveau exposé. A mesure que son goût pour la photographie grandissait, il a voulu concrétiser les idées qu’il avait en tête. Il s’est inscrit dans une école de photographie à Paris pour acquérir la maîtrise technique qui lui manquait. Grâce à l’utilisation de la lumière, il a pu donner vie à ses scènes mentales, teintées de couleurs rouge, bleu, violet, rose. La perfection esthétique et la maîtrise technique se sont imposées comme ses deux outils majeurs dans son travail.

 

Assaf Matarasso s’attache à explorer les profondeurs de l’âme pour ne pas perdre ce qui constitue le sens même de sa vie : l’émotion brute. Il a besoin de sentir ce qu’il y a de vrai en chacun de nous pour se trouver lui-même, pour affronter ses peurs et pour se regarder en face, avec ses ombres et ses lumières. Ses modèles et son acte créatif sont son salut.

 

L’ensemble de ses clichés lui a valu d’être distingué par de nombreux prix et de se faire repérer par certaines personnalités du monde de l’art. En 2013, il participe au festival Voies Off des Rencontres d’Arles. Entre temps, il présente des oeuvres à Berlin, Francfort et Paris. En 2014, il expose au Carrousel du Louvre pour Foto Fever. La même année, il est nommé parmi les 12 finalistes au Luxembourg Art Prize. En 2015, il expose à Fresh Paint à Tel Aviv, en Israël. L’année 2016 s’ouvre sur une actualité riche avec une exposition qui se tiendra en janvier à Los Angeles, dans le cadre de sa sélection au concours Printed by Picto. »

"The main topic that emerge from Assaf Matarasso’s photographic artwork is identity. His work represent the attempt to reveal ones true self, which is usually being kept behind social masks and layers of protection, fear or despair. The essence of his creations is, in fact, unfolding those external elements and unveil our true selves.

 

It seems as if the search for ‘the human kernel’ began for Assaf during his early childhood in Israel. He was only 14 when he bought his first camera “a canon 1000D” he says with a small nostalgic smile and adds “ I found myself almost obsessed with trying to capture the moment no one wants to show, the end of a smile, a glams of disappointment, a shred of insecurity in an ever confident man”. After completing his mandatory military service he traveled to Africa, then almost all over Asia and finally settled in Paris, hoping to find the place he never found in his native country. He finished his photography degree and started practicing photography professionally. Since than Assaf’s work got recognized all over the world. He participated in numerous of exhibitions in France, Germany, Luxembourg, Israel and United States. Took part in Recontres d’arles, exhibited in Foto Fever festival, Paris. Named as one of the 12 finalists of the Luxemburg Art Prize, displayed in Fresh Paint festival in Israel and L.A Photo located in California.

 

Assaf matarasso tries to address the deepness and complexity of the human nature, Facing the question of why? He replays “exploring the true elixir boiling in each one of us helps me, and hopefully others how see my work, not to lose the meaning of life, which is in my opinion the ability to feel true emotions. I need to feel what is real inside of us to find my own identity and to encourage others to do the same by facing their fears as well as excepting our complexity as human beings”.

 

Assaf’s latest series ‘SCARES’ embodies an exceptional mixture of emotional work, aestheticism and technic abilities. The journey to create each one of the pictures began with an intimate conversation between him and the model, a conversation aimed to unfold the external persona and reach to the core of the person “the minute the barer between the shown figure and the inner figure cracked, than we began shooting” Assaf explains. Than began a different manual process on each picture. By either cutting the portraits, tearing them, tacking or sewing them Assaf tried to present the deepest emotional scares each one of his model carries with him. Than the final image was photographed again, transforming once again to a two dimensional image, only now containing the emotional scares in all of their violent, pain and beautiful glory.

 

“Self-searching is an everlasting procedure, at the end a person is a sum of his great moments alongside his scares, they are an unseparated part of who we were, how we are and who we will become”
